This residential home, with the feel of a small boutique hotel, is located right in the heart of the Famed 6th Street Entertainment District and is protected as an Austin Historic Landmark. In the late 1960s this 19th century building was carefully restored into a Mid-Century Modern Home by renowned Austin architect David Graeber. Graeber had a tremendous impact on the Austin that everyone enjoys today, pioneering the concept of living downtown when he moved his family here in the late 60s.

The first incarnation of this two-story stone structure was a popular 19th century watering hole owned by an Irish immigrant and called the Shamrock Saloon. This tavern served the growing young city for many years while the Texas State Capitol was being built just a few blocks away. Eventually, as the city modernized and people and business gravitated outside of the central downtown area, the building, like many 19th century structures, fell into disrepair. Many of these original 6th Street stone buildings were abandoned and forgotten by the 1950s.

David Graeber bought 410 E 6th Street in 1968 as a run down, falling in, non-habitable shell of a structure. You should see the photo album in the home - you won't believe the transformation. 

In the late 70's he completed a strikingly modern interior that sits in great contrast to the original stone facades. Many of the interior spaces are just as David created them 4 decades ago. It is a time capsule with references to times and lives lived over 130 years in this one location.

This one-of-kind home has been featured in many magazines and articles. Many drinks and good times have been had in this special place from the Shamrock Saloon to private Graeber family parties to public events.

David Graeber said it best in an article about his family life at 410 E. 6th Street in the Austin American-Statesman:

"Our life has been immeasurably enriched by living here."
